Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 in which he liked betting on numerous card games when he was young. He found himself getting very aggressive in these card games as he was competing against his dad. After graduating from high school, Howard decided to put college on hold for a bit and relocated to New York to compete in some formidable chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s first two years were difficult as he would play countless hours and do not win most times. He earned some additional money by being an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he might better his game by balancing his life away from poker. He made an effort to get more rest and focus even more on the game.
The definite improvement in his abilities began when he began gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best players would regularly challenge one another. Howard was able to access several of the foremost players in chess. With their assistance, Howard would tweak his cunning thinking abilities. Howard used these strategic concepts in the game of NL hold’em.
He also assisted his sibling Annie Duke master poker. Annie was a great student of the game as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the proper decision. He told Annie to move out to Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker competition. She is one of the strongest women players the poker arena has ever seen. He headed to Vegas in 1993 and played cash games for the next 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, he decided to participate in more tournaments.
